Why You Must Unfollow Valueless Twitter Users

Your Twitter Followers Should Add Value To Your Profile

Follow Those Twitterers That Add Value To Your  Profile

With a heavy heart I sat down to undo the damage. Three hours later I started feeling better. I was now ready to start afresh. My apologies to those twitterers whose names I deleted from my account.

Have you committed a similar mistake before?

Torrent of Information

Let me tell you how foolish I was when I first started tweeting. I regarded twitter as a source of all kinds of information that I can rely on. Little did I realise what a torrent of information I was unleashing. At first I enjoyed the voyeurism, lurking from a distance and observing.

As time went on, however, I realised this was unsustainable. I simply had too much on my plate, most of which was pretty useless to me.

For example, I was following politicians, comedians, soccer commentators and my favourite radio presenters. It was not only difficult to keep up with all these twitterers but it was also pointless to do so.

Internet Safety Tips

My blog is about Internet safety tips and it is aimed at novice computer users and newcomers to the information super highway. It doesn’t take much to realise that a football commentator would take no interest in my blog. Even though I loved what my radio presenters were saying on twitter and I sometimes would tweet them something, this did not help my blog in any meaningful way.

People did not associate me with my blog.

Of course my intention was to attract more traffic to my blog. But it remained invisible to those hundreds of people I was following. I was going about it the wrong way. Something was not right.

Remedial Action

When I realised that I was going nowhere slowly, I decided to take immediate remedial action. I started Unfollowing most people who did not really add value to my blog. It wasn’t easy. I really felt bad doing it. But I had to act if I wanted to see any positive improvements on my blog.

My new strategy involved following relevant twitter users who might have something in common with me. Since I am a blogger, it was clear to me that I should follow fellow bloggers. It is quite intimidating though, to follow one’s role models in the blogosphere.

Pro Bloggers Are People

But these pro bloggers are people, and they also need to connect with other bloggers. In fact, most successful bloggers are more than willing to help newcomers in cyberspace.

I also make sure that I follow those bloggers who write about the Internet and social media.

If I am following you on twitter and you are not a blogger, you don’t write about the Internet or technology, please accept the possibility that I might unfollow you soon. Sorry about that, but I need to be focused.

Positive Response

After I spring-cleaned my twitter account, I started seeing some positive results. People started connecting with me. Finally, I was in touch with valuable twitter users.

I also made some changes with regard to my twitter account name. My domain name replaced my personal name and thus twitter users can now associate my blog with my domain name and avatar.

“Madalaonline” was now out there with other bloggers, instead of being buried among politicians and comedians.
